And it is a dangerous idea, because it gives us an excuse not to invest in the managers we already have.

Leadership is a craft

Think of it like any other craft. A skilled carpenter does not become skilled by being 'naturally good with their hands'. They become skilled by practicing, by learning techniques, by making mistakes and understanding why they happened.

Leadership works the same way. There are competencies that can be learned, practiced and improved. The ability to give feedback. To set clear expectations. To create psychological safety in a team. To make decisions under uncertainty.

Nobody is born with these fully developed. But everyone can develop them — with the right support and the right willingness.

Why we do not invest enough

In most companies I work with, competent specialists are hired and then promoted into management. And then everyone hopes it will work out.

Sometimes it does. Often it does not.

Not because the person lacks potential. But because nobody showed them how to lead. Nobody gave them the tools. And nobody supported them when it got difficult.

That is not the manager's fault. It is the organization’s.

What coaching actually does

Coaching is not therapy. It is not mentoring. And it is definitely not another meeting with your manager about your performance.

Coaching is a structured conversation with someone whose only job is to help you become better at yours. Without an agenda. Without judgment. With focus on you — how you think, how you make decisions, where you get stuck.

I have seen what it does to managers who invest in it. It changes how they communicate, how they prioritize, and how they handle the difficult situations that always come up.
It is one of the most valuable investments a company can make.

Team development — great people do not automatically make a great team.

Sometimes the challenge is not the individual manager. It is the team.

I often work with teams that perform below their potential — not because the individuals are weak, but because they have never learned to work together properly. Unclear roles, unresolved tensions, unspoken expectations.

Team development is about making the unspoken visible and giving the group the tools to function better — together.

That does not require things to be in crisis. It just requires someone willing to invest in the change.

If you have thoughts, questions, or simply want to talk something through — feel free to get in touch.
