It cannot be forced. And it cannot be bought.
How trust is built
In recruitment, I see it most clearly: candidates who feel they have received an honest picture of the role — with both its opportunities and its challenges — begin their assignment with a fundamentally different disposition than those who feel surprised once they are in place.
Trust is built over time by honesty. By delivering what you say you will deliver. By being the same when things are difficult as when they are easy.
What breaks it
Small deviations. An exaggeration here, an omission there. It is rarely the large untruths that damage trust most — it is the accumulation of small things that fairly quickly settles as a filter over everything that is said.
An insight from 25 years
The strongest working relationships I have had — both with clients and with candidates — have one thing in common: we have been able to say the difficult thing to each other without the relationship breaking down. On the contrary, it strengthened it.
That is what trust does when it is genuine.
