Recruiting internally is often the wisest option. It saves time and onboarding costs, signals that the organization offers career paths, and gives someone a chance they might otherwise have sought elsewhere.
Men intern recruitment har också fallgropar som få pratar om. Här är de vanligaste.
The quiet overextension
När en intern kandidat går från kollega till manager över samma grupp – förändras dynamiken. Det borde förberedas, samtalas om och ges stöd i. I praktiken lämnas den nya chefen ofta ensam med det.
Moving from colleague to manager is one of the harder transitions in working life. It requires stopping seeing yourself as part of the group and beginning to see yourself as responsible for the group. That shift rarely happens on its own.
The promotion that consoles
Sometimes someone is promoted because they are good at what they do — not because they are the right person for the next step. That is known as the Peter Principle: the idea that in an organization, people tend to be promoted until they reach a position they can no longer perform well in. Not because they have become less capable — but because the skills that made them successful in the previous role do not automatically transfer to the new one.
The question to ask is not only what the person has achieved so far, but what the next role actually requires. Those are two different things.
What makes internal recruitment successful
Clarity about why the internal candidate was chosen — and honest communication with those who were not selected.
Support through the transition — particularly when the role change means leading people who were previously colleagues.
An honest assessment of competence gaps — what does the person need to learn in order to succeed, and how is that supported?
Internal recruitment is rarely a simpler option. It is a different option — with its own requirements for preparation and follow-up.
