A good manager delivers results. A true leader delivers results – and builds the capacity to do it again, without being in the room.
That is a crucial difference. And it is harder to achieve than most people think.
I have worked closely with managers and leaders for 25 years. What I have seen time and again is that those who struggle rarely lack the will or the competence within their field. They lack the tools to lead people. And no one has ever given them those tools.
That is not their fault. But it is their responsibility to do something about it.
Leadership is a craft. It can be learned, practiced, and improved. But it requires a willingness to look at yourself with the same critical eye you turn on your organization.
Three things I have seen consistently in truly great leaders – regardless of industry or company size:
They set clear expectations, not instructions. Their people know what needs to be achieved and why – not just how.
They build psychological safety – not by being nice, but by being consistent and predictable. Those are not the same thing.
They invest in their strongest people instead of taking them for granted. The best always leave first when they stop growing.
Do you recognize that – in yourself or in someone in your organization?
If you have thoughts, questions, or simply want to talk something through – feel free to get in touch.
